It has a chemical structure nearly identical to testosterone and thus boldenone can stimulate protein synthesis and the release of erythropoietin in the kidneys. Athletes sometimes use boldenone to increase muscle mass and strength.

It is used for human performance enhancement, and is also used illegally in racehorses to enhance performance, despite being banned for use in horses competing in Olympic and Paralympic events.
